Julio Visconti Merino was born in Finana, Almeria, on June 20, 1921, and died in Almeria on October 27, 2021. A master of Spanish watercolour, he transformed Mediterranean landscape through transparency, reserve and confident synthesis.
Training and commitment to watercolour
Visconti studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Almeria and moved to Madrid in 1945. He worked across artistic contexts before devoting himself intensively to watercolour from the early 1960s.
The medium was not a secondary preparation for oil painting. Its speed, luminosity and resistance to correction became the basis of an independent language.
Water, paper and decision
Transparent pigment allows the paper to supply light. Painters must anticipate untouched reserves, moisture and the way one wash enters another.
Visconti used broad decisions to construct architecture, shorelines and atmosphere without describing every detail. Economy makes the scene more convincing because the viewer completes it.
