Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense on April 2, 1805, and died near Copenhagen on August 4, 1875. A Danish writer of novels, plays, poetry, travel books and fairy tales, he created original stories that became part of world culture.

Poverty and ambition

The son of a shoemaker and a washerwoman, Andersen left for Copenhagen as a teenager hoping to work in the theatre. Patrons eventually supported his education. Humiliation, aspiration and the feeling of being an outsider later entered many tales.

From theatre to literary fairy tale

Unlike collectors who primarily edited oral traditions, Andersen invented and reshaped stories in a distinctive conversational voice. He wrote for children while addressing adult loneliness, vanity and social cruelty.

Play

This English introduction from the National Library Board of Singapore places the tales within his broader career. It shows that his international reputation grew through travel, public reading and translation.

Not only for children

Play

This English lecture examines the modern relevance of the tales. Their endings are not always comforting: sacrifice may remain unrewarded, and transformation can carry loss.

Essential stories

“The Ugly Duckling” turns exclusion into a complicated story of identity. “The Little Mermaid” links desire with pain rather than romantic fulfilment. “The Emperor’s New Clothes” exposes collective obedience, while “The Little Match Girl” confronts poverty without rescuing its child through earthly society.

Achievements and legacy

  • He established the literary fairy tale as a major authorial form.
  • His direct voice joined oral immediacy with sophisticated symbolism.
  • His stories travelled through translation, theatre, music and animation.
  • International Children’s Book Day is observed on his birthday.

Andersen made wonder inseparable from vulnerability. His tales survive because beauty never completely conceals the cost of belonging, love and imagination.
